Format and Conditions of Entry
To compete at the National Championships all riders must be members of and horses and ponies must be registered with Dressage Ireland at the time of qualification.
The format for the National Championships is that each horse and rider combination (up to and including Advanced Medium level) will ride two tests.
To win the title of Champion at Elementary, Medium or Advanced Medium Level, it is the combined score of each of the two tests ridden which will determine the overall result.
In Preliminary and Novice classes, these classes will be divided with a ride-off at each level to decide the final Championship placing on Sunday.
Rosettes will be awarded in preliminary, novice, elementary, medium and advanced medium for each of the two tests ridden.
Preliminary, Novice, Elementary, Medium Championships
To participate in Preliminary, Novice, Elementary, Medium Championships, competitors must have achieved a qualifying standard of 62% on two occasions between 12 April 2010 (after Winter Finals) and 12 September 2010. Please note two occasions means two separate shows, festivals are regarded as one show for the purpose of qualification.
Advanced Medium and above Championships
To participate in Advanced Medium and above Championships, competitors must have achieved a qualifying standard of 62% on one occasion between 12 April 2010 (after Winter Finals) and 12 September 2010.
Freestyle to Music Championships
Qualification is required as set out above for Preliminary, Novice, Elementary, Medium, Advanced Medium and above. E.g. to compete at the Elementary Freestyle to music competitors must attain the required qualification for the Elementary championship. Competitors are asked to provide their music to the organisers at least one hour before the start of the competition. Please note that music must be supplied on a CD. It is the responsibility of competitors to ensure that their chosen music CD is handed to the show secretary on time and collected after the completion of the classes. Dressage Ireland does not accept any responsibility for loss or damage to CDs. Please note two occasions means two separate shows, festivals are regarded as one show for the purpose of qualification.
Para Class
To qualify for this class, a rider needs to have achieved 62% twice at the relevant level.

Young Dressage horse
This class is open to horses 4 or 5 years old, of any breeding, who are in their first year of competition. Horse and rider combinations must have achieved 62% twice on 2 occasions between 12 April 2010 (after Winter Finals) and 12 September 2010 at Preliminary or Novice Classes. If there are sufficient entries, the class to be divided.
Regional Team Championship
This class is open to one team from each Dressage Ireland region. Each team shall comprise of two competitors entered in the Novice classes and two competitors entered in the Elementary classes. The best three scores are to count. Teams must be declared with the show secretary before the start of competition on Friday 24 September. Competitors belong to the region that they have declared for at the time of registration of membership for 2010.
Pony / Junior / Young Rider
There will be a rosette awarded to the best Pony, Junior and Young Rider in each Championship Class.
You must declare P/JNR/YR on your entry form to qualify for this.
National Champion
The National Champion is the winner of the Big Tour, with a minimum of 2 competitors, BUT, the winner of the Grand Prix must have attained a minimum of 60% to be deemed worthy of the title "National Champion". Should the winner not gain 60%, the title will go the winner of the Small Tour, providing this winner has gained 60% or more.
Special Awards
- The Irish Draught Horse Society Trophy will be awarded to the highest placed full R.I.D., who obtains the highest percentage in the highest class at the Championship.
In the absence of a full R.I.D., the trophy will be awarded to the horse with the highest percentage of draught, which obtains the highest mark at the highest level at the Championship.
It is the combined score in classes 1-4 which will dictate the qualifying mark. - The Abbeyleix Owen perpetual trophy will be presented to the highest placed registered Connemara pony, in the highest class.
- In each Championship class, the highest placed Irish bred horse will win a special rosette.
General Conditions
- Horse and pony rider combinations may only compete in two consecutive levels at the National Championships.
- It is the competitor's responsibility to ensure that they have met the qualifying criteria and that the official 2010 entry form is filled out correctly. It is the responsibility of all competitors to ensure that the qualifying scores upon which they are relying were awarded at shows affiliated to Dressage Ireland in front of a listed judge who is qualified to judge at this level. Please note that qualification for the National Championships is for horse/rider combinations (i.e. the rider who qualifies the horse must also ride it in the Championships).
- Competitors are asked to enter as early as possible, so as to facilitate arena planning, judges and writers.
- Passports are required at the National Championships and will be checked.
- Competitors are reminded to ensure that all vaccinations are up to date.
- The results of the competitions at the Championships are final. No correspondence or representations will be entertained.
