NORTHERN IRELAND YOUTH DRESSAGE HAS BEEN RUNNING SINCE 2012.
Running since 2012, NIYD was set up by Dressage Ireland Northern Region under the DI Youth Development Scheme which aims to provide training and competition for all members which follows a national strategy and is replicated in each region. DI encourages youth participation in the sport of dressage, and ultimately offer services to entice membership in the organization of Dressage Ireland Ltd.
NIYD provides regular training at two venues:
Alison Mastin Moore coaches at the Laurel View Equestrian Centre; &
Kirsty Jackson coaches at Gransha Equestrian Centre.
Objectives of the strategy include:
Development of a comprehensive pathway of progression for current and new members towards international competition.
To ensure that our objectives are clearly communicated to all members on a national and regional level.
Through regular training, both practical and theoretical excellent results have been achieved. Riders are assisted towards annual goals, be they Pony Club, registered or unregistered dressage/eventing Silver Spurs or international aspirations.
We are proud in Northern Ireland to have produced riders from basics to direct entry onto the Horse Sport Ireland High Performance squads aiming at (and achieving) international competition at various age-groups.
Training is in groups of three or four meaning that each rider gets individual attention. Riders are given test practice and training towards pony club qualification at both area and championship level. Each year we develop riders for the Silver Spurs dressage assessment scheme and Northern Ireland have had many bursary winners over the years. The beginning of registered competition for many riders is at Trailblazers level which leads those qualified to the National Dressage Championships. NIYD offers coaching at all levels from Introductory dressage to Prix St Georges.
Feedback on training sessions is both given and received along with regular handouts and newsletters suggesting further study.
Our aim – to provide top rate education to both members and non-members of Dressage Ireland aged between 8 and 25. Providing the rider can walk, trot and canter unaided they can join.
Our philosophy is based firstly on the welfare of the horse, then ensuring a welcoming environment to learn in with like-minded young riders. Coaches are well qualified and up to date on CPD and child protection.
Some rider’s that joined NIYD in 2012 are still with us, others start at NIYD then move on to being coached by many of Irelands other highly experienced and qualified coaches. Riders may be show jumpers, eventers or dressage based. Every rider and every pony/horse needs good basics.
Training is done either fortnightly or monthly in small groups at a similar level. Whilst competition is not our top aim, most of our riders are competitive and we have seen quite a few NIYD faces make it up to Pony Club and Riding Club Championships, Home International or full International level. If you keep improving you can get there.
If you have a rider between the ages of 8 and 25 (you do not have to be a members of DI) who wishes to join our friendly group contact:
